McCauley Pharmacy Commits €100,000 to Wexford GAA Wellness Programme

McCauley Health and Beauty Pharmacy, a leading Irish owned retail pharmacy group, has today announced a €100,000 investment over three years to support the roll out of an exciting new Wexford GAA wellness programme.

The partnership follows the opening of two new McCauley stores in Wexford, including a unique express pharmacy in Enniscorthy dedicated to medical pharmacy services as well as a store New Ross.

Wexford GAA Wellness, which is the first programme of its kind by any sporting organisation in Ireland, will focus on physical, social and emotional wellbeing, inclusion and diversity, as well as life-long learning.

The initiative, which aims to tackle some of the biggest issues facing young people and the community at large, will be overseen by a dedicated Well Being Coordinator, making Wexford GAA the only county and sporting organisation in the country to employ such a resource.

Commenting on the initiative, Tony McEntee, CEO, McCauley Pharmacy, said: “We at McCauley Health and Beauty Pharmacy are proud to be supporting Wexford GAA Wellness. Wexford GAA need to be commended for their development of this innovative and ground-breaking youth wellness programme, the first county in Ireland to do so. As a provider of healthcare in our communities we wanted to partner with Wexford GAA in this programme which we believe will play a vital role in helping the people of Wexford, particularly youths, to understand the importance of physical and mental wellbeing, and promote inclusion and diversity within local communities. Furthermore, this partnership, coupled with the launch of our two new stores, underscores our commitment and dedication as a business to the local communities we serve and Wexford in particular.”

Also commenting, Derek Kent, Chairman of Wexford GAA said: “Wexford GAA is the lead organisation in promoting core community values as well as the physical, mental and social wellbeing of our county. We are committed to creating future leaders in sport, community and business life by engaging, educating, and connecting, hard to reach target audiences across Wexford, including young people, new Irish populations, those with special needs, and older men. Wexford GAA Wellness is yet another example of how we as an organisation are working to combat the issues facing local communities. We are delighted to have the support of the McCauley brand behind this initiative and feel its new image, which promotes health and wellbeing, is a perfect fit for us.”

Working alongside the ongoing Hurling 365 campaign, this initiative will enable Wexford GAA to reach more than 5,500 primary and secondary school children. To maximise the positive impact of the scheme, training will also be offered to older fans who are overweight or at risk at risk of obesity.

Data suggests that over 30% of children in Wexford schools come from families of non-Irish nationalities and, as such, the initiative aims to promote inclusivity and diversity to bolster harmony in the local community. Additionally, activities will be tailored to suit people who may have learning or physical disabilities to ensure their participation.

A vital element of the programme will be education, with Wexford GAA offering leadership courses, athletic development advice and nutritional information to first year pupils in local post primary schools.

Additionally, a series of events as part of new Wexford GAA Wellness Week will be offered to the community, including a 5k Family run, a player welfare seminar and a family fun day.
