McCabes Pharmacy Launches Medicated Weight Management Service

February 25, 2025 – McCabes Pharmacy is introducing a Medicated Weight Management Service, designed to provide patients with structured support in managing their weight, including access to prescription treatments where clinically appropriate.

As part of this service, Mounjaro (tirzepatide), a prescription medicine licensed for weight management, will be available to eligible patients following an assessment by a doctor. Other treatment options may be introduced in the future.

Addressing a Public Health Challenge

Obesity remains a significant health issue in Ireland, with the Healthy Ireland Survey 2024 reporting that 21% of adults live with obesity and 35% are classified as overweight—a combined total of 56% of the adult population facing weight-related health concerns.

To support patients in their weight management journey, McCabes Pharmacy’s new service provides a structured and pharmacist supported approach, ensuring that individuals receive oversight and professional guidance throughout their treatment.

How the McCabes Pharmacy, Medicated Weight Management Service Works:

The Medicated Weight Management Service follows a three-step process to ensure patient safety and appropriateness of treatment:

  1. Doctor Consultation* – Patients can book a consultation with an online doctor, via www.mccabespharmacy.com or their own GP, who will assess whether a prescription treatment is suitable for them.
  2. Prescription – If appropriate, the doctor or GP may issue a prescription, which can be sent to a McCabes pharmacy of the patient’s choice to participate in this service from McCabes Pharmacy
  3. Pharmacy Consultation – Patients will have a structured consultation with a trained healthcare provider including BMI and waist circumference checks, before dispensing the prescribed medication, if suitable.

Superintendent Pharmacist Denis O’Driscoll commented on the importance of professional support in weight management:

“Weight management is a complex and individual journey. Our priority at McCabes Pharmacy is to provide safe, evidence-based, and pharmacist-supported care that helps patients make informed decisions about their health.”

Patient Support & Accessibility

McCabes Pharmacy will provide educational resources and in-store consultations to help patients understand their treatment options.

As with all prescription medications, Mounjaro is subject to a doctor’s clinical assessment and may not be suitable for everyone. Patients should always consult a healthcare professional before starting treatment.
