Ireland’s Largest Science Communication Event returns in-person for the first time in two years
  • Now in its seventh year, SCI:COM will return for the first in-person event since 2020.
  • Event will explore how we ‘represent’ in science communication through inspiring talks, workshops and guest speakers.
  • Founder of The Vagina Museum, the world’s first museum dedicated to the gynecological anatomy, Florence Schechter will present at SCI:COM event on December 7th.

SCI:COM, Ireland’s all-island science communications conference returns for another exciting day of talks, panels and workshops this December 7th at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

This year’s keynote speaker is founder of the Vagina Museum, Florence Schechter. Schechter started the original project in 2017 to build the world’s first bricks and mortar museum dedicated to the gynaecological anatomy. She has won a number of awards for her work and the museum has been covered in international news, from Time magazine to appearing in a joke on Saturday Night Live.

Other key speakers Dr David McKeown, Assistant Professor at UCD and Engineering Manager for the EIRSAY-1, a project to build Ireland’s first satellite, Hazel Chu, Green Party Councillor and former Mayor of Dublin and Patrick Freyne, Journalist with the Irish Times and author.

Previous speakers at the event include legendary Hollywood actor and science communication advocate, Alan Alda and Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Deborah Blum.

Now in its seventh year, SCI:COM is proudly supported by Science Foundation Ireland as well as other organisations in the science communication community, including Pfizer.

Speaking ahead of the event, Deb Mangone, Country Manager, Pfizer Healthcare Ireland, said: “We are really pleased to be supporting this year’s SCI:COM event which brings together a cross-functional group of stakeholders to discuss science in an interactive and engaging way. At Pfizer, we know that collaboration is incredibly important to move science forward.  Every day, we strive to deliver our purpose, breakthroughs that change patients’ lives.”

Dr Ruth Freeman, Director of Science for Society, Science Foundation Ireland said:

“SCI:COM is an incredible gathering showing Ireland as a true leader in science communication. This event challenges us all to look outside the box and this year is no different.”

Building on the success of previous years, organiser and award-winning broadcaster, Jonathan McCrea said: “I am delighted SCI:COM is back and in person this year at the Aviva Stadium. We have an incredible roster of speakers and breakout sessions to look forward to on the day, bringing like-minded people together with fresh perspectives to challenge our theme, and more.”

The theme for this year’s event is “Represent”, with the agenda set to explore how we represent in science communications in a variety of interactive talks and breakout sessions.

During the event, attendees can:

  • Develop skills for effective science communication in breakout sessions delivered by experienced professionals from a wide range of disciplines
  • Hear insights from leaders on topics such as how we can improve science communications in emergencies
  • Meet like-minded people and share experiences in the thriving science communication community in Ireland
