Codex Beauty, a global clean beauty skincare company announced that its skincare line, Bia, has achieved Microbiome-friendly certification, according to MyMicrobiome Standard 18.10, for all six face products (Day Cream, Skin Superfood, Eye Gel Cream, Facial Oil, Exfoliating Wash, and Wash Off Cleansing Oil).

The Microbiome-friendly certification provides the world’s first seal of quality that awards microbiome-friendly cosmetics and personal care products. MyMicrobiome Standard 18.10 is one of six standards, each standard testing for application on different body areas. The standards were developed in 2018 by MyMicrobiome AG under the scientific guidance of microbiologist Kristin Neumann, PhD. In 2019 the first Microbiome-friendly certified products hit the German market. The company MyMicrobiome AG is located in Liechtenstein, spreading information about the microbiome to the broad public world-wide via its internet platform www.mymicrobiome.info. The tests according to MyMicrobiome Standards are conducted in ISO certified laboratories in Germany.

The microbiome is extremely important to human health. It represents the total amount of microbes (bacteria, viruses, fungi) living on and in our body. A mix of “good” microbes is essential for keeping the “bad” microbes away, so our bodies stay balanced. However, the microbiome is often destroyed by a number of factors, such as antibiotics, poor diet, and skincare products that strip the surface of the dermis, eliminating the healthy bacteria necessary to maintain clear, healthy skin. Without a robust microbiome, unwanted organisms can colonize on the skin, leading to contact dermatitis or other skin conditions.

Until now, there was no way for consumers to know which products would negatively impact the microbiome. MyMicrobiome Standards can now provide this information, with a testing methodology that examines how products directly influence organisms of the skin microbiome. The testing criteria evaluate the following:

  1. The microbial quality of the product
  2. The influence of the product on natural, healthy skin balance
  3. The influence of the product on the bacterial diversity of the specific body region
  4. The influence of the product on the growth behavior of the microbes of the specific body region

Codex Beauty is bio-science skincare company committed to discovering the next innovations in clean, sustainable beauty. As declared in the “Codex Beauty Code,” which details the guiding principles of the brand, the fundamental tenets include customer safety and proven product efficacy. “As we use more and more products every day, and become more aware of their impact on the skin microbiome, the beauty industry needs a meaningful standard by which to assure customers that the products they use will not significantly alter or impact their microbiome, thereby leading to longer term skin problems.

Codex Beauty is excited to partner with MyMicrobiome to demonstrate that our products are designed to be microbiome friendly.” Barb Paldus, CEO of Codex Beauty stated.

Codex Beauty’s Bia collection received Microbiome-friendly certification for all six products in the line, including the Bia Day Cream, Bia Skin Superfood, Bia Eye Gel Cream, Bia Facial Oil, Bia Exfoliating Wash and Bia Wash Off Cleansing Oil. With roots in Irish herbal science, Bia products pay tribute to Ireland’s local herbalists and their expert knowledge of therapeutic plants. Bia skincare is designed to hydrate and nourish skin with high quality—and extremely safe—proven ingredients that deliver quantifiable results. Like all Codex Beauty collection, Bia utilizes a patent-pending, food-grade preservative system to support microbiome diversity and skin barrier integrity, as well as airless containers made from sugarcane wherever possible to further maximize product safety and shelf life.

To reach the highest level of scientific rigor, Codex Beauty works with independent, third-party certification bodies to verify its claims for ingredients and formulations. In addition to Microbiome-friendly seal of quality, Codex Beauty also holds certifications from EcoCert COSMOS Organic, Leaping Bunny, EWG (The Environmental Working Group), PEFC (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), Carbon Footprint Standard, and Vegan.
