New Research Reveals a Staggering 92% of Irish Women Experience Menopause Symptoms, Highlighting Urgent Need for Support

Dublin, 1st October 2025

New research, titled “Menopause Dialogues – The Census,” commissioned by CanesMeno®, highlights the significant challenges faced by Irish women experiencing menopause. The study reveals widespread symptoms, profound impacts on quality of life, and a pressing need for improved support and resources. Coinciding with these findings, Bayer, makers of Canesten®, today announces the launch of CanesMeno®: a new brand offering an expertly crafted digital educational hub and a dedicated product range designed to support those with Menopause in Ireland.

Targeting the estimated one million women in Ireland currently navigating perimenopause or menopause, CanesMeno® aims to empower them to manage their journey with confidence and informed choices. The study, “Menopause Dialogues – The Census,” found that a staggering 92% of women experiencing or having experienced menopause reported symptoms. Despite this prevalence, the research uncovers a critical disconnect in awareness, support, and the societal understanding of menopause’s true impact.

The “Menopause Dialogues – The Census” reveals several critical insights into the experiences of women navigating menopause. A pervasive symptom burden is evident, with a mere 8% of affected women reporting no symptoms at all. Over half of all women contend with hot flushes, lack of energy, and difficulty sleeping, and these two symptoms, hot flushes and low energy, remain vivid memories even for post-menopausal individuals.

Despite a high overall awareness of menopause symptoms (87%), a notable 13% of women experiencing symptoms initially failed to recognize their connection to menopause, underscoring the need for proactive educational initiatives, particularly as women approach perimenopause.

The impact of menopause extends significantly to women’s sex lives, with over one-third (38%) of all affected women reporting a negative impact, a figure that climbs to nearly half (46%) among those currently in menopause. Reduced libido is the primary culprit, followed by hot flushes/night sweats, mood changes, and fatigue. Beyond these physical manifestations, the research uncovers considerable emotional burdens, with nearly one in four women (23%) identifying “the pressure to be ‘fine'” as the most significant unacknowledged challenge of menopause.

Workplace support for women experiencing menopause is notably lacking, with only 10% expressing complete satisfaction, highlighting a substantial opportunity for employers to enhance their support systems. Furthermore, a concerning 61% of women believe there is an insufficient number of trusted and credible resources available for those navigating menopause or perimenopause. This sentiment is particularly strong among perimenopausal women, suggesting a feeling of unpreparedness for the onset of symptoms.

Finally, women overwhelmingly desire improved support from their General Practitioners as their initial point of contact. There is also a strong call for greater public awareness and increased access to reliable, credible information, indicating clear avenues for brand activation and public health initiatives.

Commenting on the findings of “Menopause Dialogues – The Census” and the new initiative, Television personality and Menopause Advocate Maia Dunphy said:

“These research findings really hit home. As women, we’re often expected to just ‘get on with it,’ but menopause is a profound life stage that impacts almost every aspect of well-being, from sleep and energy to relationships and work. The fact that so many women feel unsupported, or even unaware of what they’re experiencing, is a clear call to action. We need more open conversations, better access to trusted information, and a societal shift towards truly understanding and supporting women through menopause. The launch of CanesMeno® and its comprehensive approach, combining vital education with targeted product solutions, is a crucial step on their menopause journey.”
